I have a question YA. Does the Lens for a Nikon D3100 fit the Nikon D700 or even the new Nikon D800?

The kit lenses for the D3100 are DX. They can be safely used on a D700 or D800, but images would darken at the corners if used full frame. (This differs from Canon, which recommends that its EF-S lenses not be put on their FX bodies at all, ever.) The Nikon FX bodies are supposed to be smart enough to recognize the DX lenses and by default should select a cropped portion of the sensor to behave like a DX body. There should be a settling to use the full FX sensor, although the corner darkening will then be visible. There are FX lenses that can be used on the D3100. Some of those will autofocus with it, and some will not.

All lenses (AF-S) for the D3100 will fit and meter on the D700 and D800, but…
These two professional grade cameras use an FX (full-sized) sensor, and DX (crop-sized) lenses like the 18-55mm AF-S VR kit lens will force the new camera to switch down to a DX portion of the sensor. Basically, you can use any Nikon mount lens on the D700 or D800, but only FX lenses will show the new camera's real capabilities.

p.s. The D700 and D800 have extra mechanical and electronic connections so they'll work perfectly with many excellent and easily accessible Nikon film camera lenses.
