I'm trying to buy a new NIKON D300S (USD 1.699) and I can't find it in any retail in USA? Not in BH Photo, Best Buy, etc and etc.
I called NIKON directly and nobody could give me a straight answer saying where and when it will be available
I suppose they are getting out ok market with this model.
Anybody has an idea of what is going on?
Any clue if a buy a Sony A77 or a Canon?

Check with your local camera shops.

I had to call mine to order a part and asked if they had the D300s and they had a couple.http://www.schillersonline.com/spec_sheet.html?catalog[product_guids][0]=bd0275e7-a67a-4b92-ac67-f02fb61dfaa2

An a77 is a totally different animal, as is the Canon 7d.

The D300s is indeed up for replacement. I'd expected it to have been revealed by now but I suspect the Thailand flooding have messed that up. Nex announcement seems to be early december and that may feature a d300s or a d700 replacement.

You're not giving any indication why you choose this model so we can't offer any fitting advice.

You may have missed it but there are a few things happening in the world of photography that could affect your ability to buy a new D300s

* the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan
* the recent flooding in one of the major industrial parks in Thailand.
* Nikon is just about to introduce the new D400 which will replace the D300 series cameras.

In 2005, it was very difficult to find new D100's, just before the D200 was announced.

Some of the Nikon cameras are/were so popular that supply just could not keep up with demand.

If you already have a Nikon system, changing to a Sony or Canon will just cost you a lot of money you could be spending on more lenses.

One of my colleagues bought a D7000 because he needed a APS-C sensored Nikon, but did not want to wait for the D400 to arrive on our shores. He has been very happy with the D7000 which actually out performs his old D300

When you start buying professional grade cameras like the D300 and D3 series, one must be patient for the next version to arrive

D100 to D200 over three years
D200 to D300 just about two years
D300 to D400 four years and counting

D1 to D2 over 4 years
D2 to D3 three years
D3 to D4 four years and counting
