Looking to upgrade Nikon DSLR. Advice needed? - 1

I have a Nikon D70 right now and would love to upgrade. I love the D700, but can't afford it. I'm looking for something under $600 that is a DSLR. I like the flip out LCD feature, but that isn't too important. I would like it to have HD Video capibilities. Any suggestions? Been looking at the Nikon D3100.Is that a good choice?

My boyfriend is a photographer and is upgrading from a D70 to the D3100 in May. As far as I can see it is one of the better cheaper DSLRs. Look at customer reviews on Amazon and places.

In a couple of respects a D70 --> D3100 is a downgrade. The D3100 doesn't have a focus motor in the body, the D70 does (so can autofocus will All Nikon AF lenses - the D3100 needs AF-S lenses to autofocus). Also, the D70 can control an off camera flash wirelessly via Nikon's CLS system - a D3100 can't.

An upgrade would be more like a D90 - the D3100 is an entry level model.

I totally agree with deep blue. You need to do a LOT more studying and research. The 3100 is a very cheap entry level camera. I would much, much rather have your D70. The 3100 is not an "upgrade" by any means.

I would recommend holding on to your D70 and saving up for either a D90 or D7000. I personally don't see the D3100 as an "upgrade" beyond the fact that it was released after the D70 and captures more pixels! Don't get me wrong, it is a nice camera but if you were looking at the D700 I think you would be much happier with a D90 or D7000.
