Issues connecting Nikon D800 to computer?

So I just bought a Nikon D800 and have installed the program that came with it on a CD. I'm trying to view the photos I've taken with the camera on my computer, but when I connect the camera to my computer, it doesn't work. Initially, I get an alert balloon saying it's installing the device driver software, which is normal, but then it stops and says the device driver software has not been successfully installed.
If it's relevant, my computer runs on Windows 7 Starter.

Hmm

It seems that this may be your first fully adjustable camera

Those of us who have been shooting dSLR cameras for over 10 years, remove the memory cards from the camera and insert them into the card reader on our computer. Most desktop computer have both CF and SD slots. If you have a notebook computer, you will have to spend about $15 for a USB 2.0 card reader. Then all you have to do is use your computer skills and copy all the images from the memory card to your computer, to a new file folder named for the subject/location and date. This way you can find your images years later.

My desktop runs on Win7 and using a card reader has always transferred images faster than a USB cord attached to a camera and computer.

My new notebook is running on Win8 and has USB 3.0 ports and copying my image files is about five time faster than using the old USB 2.0 ports.

Uninstall whatever you just installed from the camera's CD. To copy pictures from the camera to the computer, follow this.

To view the pictures in the computer, you simply double-click the filename or thumbnail in Windows Explorer or (Mac) Finder. If you want a better way to do it, download and install Irfanview. It's free.

Don't ever connect your camera to your computer unless you plan to shoot tethered.

Get a USB memory card reader. You remove the memory card from your camera, install in the reader, and it has a USB connection on one end, plug that into your computer. Done. You can cut copy past the images, or use a program to move the images to your computer.

Once they are safely on your computer NEVER erase anything via your computer. Remove the card, place back in your camera and format the card in your camera. Do this, and you won't have any problems.

Ditch the CD and get a real program like Adobe's Lightroom 5. You can try it for free for 30 days, no CC required. With your card connected to your computer, you will "import" images from the card into lightroom.
