Compact flash won't work on the computer?

I have a Nikon D1x and I don't have the camera cord so I have to use the compact flash card. I put the cf card in my computer and it reads it, but it keeps saying it needs to be formatted (I've formatted it several times on my camera) but when I try to format it on the computer it says "windows was unable to format". Then when I go to "My computer" and click on the removable disk for the card it shows a file named "DCII" and I can't open it. There's some sort of error. Then my computers unable to read it at all unless I restart my computer. Its a brand new card. Any suggestions on what to do?

You should never format it from the computer, even if it would let you.
My guess it could be the fault of the card, the computer, or the card reader. Go to a store like Best Buy, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Staples, etc and see if a display computer can read your card. They should be helpful, since you may be buying something based on the result.

There may something wrong with your card reader.

NEVER format a memory card using the computer.

Only use the format feature on your camera
