Take manual on nikon d5200 won't work w/o flash?

So I recently got a nikon d5200 and it worked fine, then i took a video once and when I went to take manual pictures again without flash, I would take them but they would turn up black, just plain old black. I don't know what to do, help

Shooting manually means using your meter display to select the correct shutter speed/ aperture/ ISO settings.
Get it wrong, and either everything's white, or everything's black.

You need to learn how to use the cameras fine lightmeter.
Look on pages 62-67 of your usually useful user manual.
