Can you use a DX lens on a camera with an FX sensor and still get good results?
I have a Nikon D3X camera and would like to buy a new lens but because the camera has an FX sensor, the lenses are really expensive, therefore I was wondering if I could use the camera with a DX lens and still get great results?
E.g. Would the results be just the same as if I was using a camera with a DX sensor and DX lens?
Added (1). Will this definitely also not damage the camera at all?
Added (2). I didn't personally spend a fortune on the D3X - I'm a property photographer and the camera was therefore purchased by the company that I work for.
Added (3). The company that I work for have bought me a wide angle FX lens for my property photography - However I want to be able to try other types of photography in my spare time, and therefore need to purchase a new lens myself but haven't got the money to buy an FX lens.
Yes, Nikon's Full-frame cameras crop the sensor when a DX lens is fitted.
The Nikon FX digital SLR's can work with DX lenses to utilize a a DX size portion of the sensor and give you a result equivalent to having a DX body working with the DX lens.
This is not something that users of Canon FX bodies should try, because there would be serious problems putting an EF-S lens on an FX Canon body.
I use my DX lenses on two FX cameras, a D3 and D800. The camera automatically crops the shot to the DX format.
I wonder why you would spend $8, 000 for a D3x and then complain because full frame lenses cost too much.
You can look for good used FX lenses.
As correctly told by others, your D3X will automatically go into crop mode when a DX lens is mounted. But I can suggest an alternative.
Your D3X can meter with any Nikon Ai or Ai converted lens. Look for older manual focus lenses (as property doesn't move) and you'll find plenty for very, very good prices. All 35mm Nikon slr lenses are full-frame (FX) and will show your camera to it's fullest ability, at a "bargain" price.
Realize that when the camera goes into the DX mode, the resolution is reduced.
If the company purchased the camera, why not ask them to purchase some lenses as well? Using DX lenses will work, but you won't use all of that expensive full frame sensor, which is a massive waste.
Second hand "D" lenses will work properly, including autofocus, and shouldn't be any more expensive than a DX lens.
This should be cheap enough to let you learn everything you need to know about photography.

It's an FX lens and is normal/standard for the D3X meaning it has the same angle of view as human eyes. Aside from learning exposure computations if you are willing to go that far, this non-zooming lens will also force you to learn composition.
