Fashion photography as a career?

Since I was a little kid, I've always wanted to become a fashion photographer. I grew up in a family who really loves photography. As a kid, I spent my time studying my dad's Nikon SLR and take pictures. Now that I'm 16 and going to college, my mom doesn't want me to get photography as my career but I can't picture my self doing something other than photography but Its ok with her if I will study fashion photography after having a job. I love photography, as a teen, I spent my time going to the library, researching about photography, I take pictures and play with lights and everything that is connected with photography.

I'm planning to go to Academy of Art University after taking physical therapy in a university in Cali. My dream is to become a fashion photographer ever since. What are your suggestions or what do you think about my idea of being a fashion photographer?

Don't do what your Mom wants you to do, do what YOU want to do. If fashion photography is a dream, go for it. But you do need to understand the reality of it - it is not going to be easy. You will have to build a decent portfolio and don't get knocked back if someone says they don't like your stuff. Start researching into fashion photographers and contacting them, asking how they started. Tell your Mom that employers are looking for any kind of higher education qualification, whether it is fashion photography or not, it proves that you have the ability and determination to do well and want to learn

You need to study that word Fashion - meaning 'that which is in favour at the moment'. Like the clothes themselves, all people connected with that industry are subject to the whim of the moment, you may be flavour of the month or flavour of the year, but sooner or later you may lose favour. So be prepared to take the hard knocks and move on when the mood of the age indicates it.
