I currently use a Nikon D5100 along with a Yongnuo YN468-II flash and my AF assist beam is not firing when i about to take a picture. Is there something that might be wrong with it? I have fully charged the battaries, reset my cameras settings, set the shooting to single shot.

The assist beam where? On the camera body or on the flash? I'm not sure on Nikon, but when you mount an external flash on a Canon, the camera body assist beam does not function because the flash has an infrared beam that does a much better job. If the Nikon also works this way, and your Yougnuo also has no beam, then you are out of luck.

If you are meaning that the Yongnuo DOES have an assist beam and IT is the one not working, then all I know to say is that it is broken. I strongly suggest you get a dedicated Nikon flash for your camera.

One last thing, remember, the beam will only output when light levels are low enough to where the lens is struggling to find focus. If you are not shooing in very dark conditions, it is normal for the assist beam to not work.
