I'm getting a Nikon d3100 and its coming with AF-S DX 18-55mm VR Lens and i was told to get a 50mm for wanting to take scenary pictures and portraits. Would this do anything for me? I'm new to this and not ever sure if this would be anything of use.thanks! If someone knows A LOT about cameras and photography could you add me?

If your goal is to shoot landscapes, you need to use the 18-55 mm lens with it set to 18 mm. A 50 mm lens is far too long to do that.

The 50 mm is an excellent lens for shooting portraits.

To know what a 50 mm lens angle of view is, just tape your 18-55 mm lens at the 50 mm zoom setting and take a few days shooting photos at the focal length.

My guess is you may want to use your D3100 and 18-55 mm lens for a few months before spending a dime on a second lens

Here is a link that shows you want various focal length lenses see

What is the hurry? Start with the 18-55, it is an excellent lens for many photo assignments, including landscape. As you gain experience then think about a second lens.

I would strongly suggest a pro type tripod like a Monfrotto and a remote shutter release. Buy those right away.

No, at this point in time you have no need to be buying another lens. THIS is what will do FAR more for you than another lens:

You should start off with the kit lens (the one it comes with) and play around with the different zooms, and get to know the camera. Only when you feel almost completely comfortable with all of the settings and have took at least a few photos you are really happy with should you look into a new lens. ( the ones for land scape/ wide angle are pretty pricey though)
