If I buy a new Nikon D3100, would I need to purchase anything else?

I'm new with Nikon cameras and I was wondering what all would I need after purchasing it new. What comes with it and what additional things would I have to get if I have to get additional things such as accessories that are needed?

Do not buy d3100, get d5000 instead, price difference is low and d5000 is much better than d3100.
well if you buy kit, no you not need to buy anything else, they will give you everything.

If you don't buy a kit you need a lens then. That would be a 18-55mm lens. Thats a standard lens. Thats about $200 dollars right there.

Basically, if you bought it with the 18-55mm kit lens, the only other thing you will need is the memory card. I would recommend putting a UV filter in front of the lens for physical protection. If you shoot wisely, this would be enough.

The usual problem exists when you suddenly realize that there are other lenses out there and you'd feel more comfortable if you were handling a very long and powerful lens to pull far objects closer to you. If you convince yourself to walk instead, you will save a lot of money.

Needed:

- Memory card (8gb, class 6 or better)
- microfiber cloth
- rocket blower

Really adviseable:
- photography for beginners book
- lens hood for the kit lens

You'll need a bag, an extra battery, an SD card at least 8GB, a Lenspen (look it up) to clean the lens, a tripod to take good pictures. That will get you started.put aside about a hundred dollars for that.

Then you'll want to buy either another lens or a flash since the lens that comes with it is limited to 3X zoom and not good in low light. That's not immediately necessary though and can probably wait util after you learn to use the camera. Put aside about 500 for that (or 250 if you want to pinch pennies)

After a few months your sensor will get dirty and you'll have to have it professionally serviced or spend money on a cleaning kit to do it yourself. A professional cleaning will run you around 50 dollars, a respectable cleaning kit can be had for about 20

Accessory cost is really expensive with DSLRs, especially keeping the sensor clean
