Would this be a good lens for indoor sports photography?

I have a Nikon D70s, and I'm looking into a new lens for indoor photography. I need something that will zoom (somewhat) and that is cheap. Would this work well?

It will work ok… You will most likely have to use a flash and a tripod to get hopefully get some decent picture

There's not really enough light inside to shoot sports with an f/4-5.6 lens. The focal length is nice, but your ISO will be at maximum and it still won't be giving you fast enough shutter speeds.

Unfortunately, fast zoom lenses are never cheap. For instance, the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens that most indoor sports photographers favor is $2, 500.

Your best bet if you're on a budget is to go with primes. The crop sensor on your camera will turn a 50mm lens into about a 75mm lens. Fast primes, like the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 are very cheap for their quality. It takes a little getting used to to shoot without zooms, but on a budget there's not really another option.

I think you might find that lens frustratingly slow.

Research 70-200mm f/2.8 or AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D

Probably not.especially since it's indoor, which means you'll need as wide as an aperture as possible to get your shutter speeds up.

For indoor sports, you really need f/2.8 or bigger. With something as slow as f/5.6, you'd may find that even ISO 3200 isn't fast enough to capture non-blurry images.

I would consider the Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 as it's one of the cheaper options for a f/2.8 telezoom. It doesn't zoom out far, but since you're shooting indoor sports, it should be sufficient.http://photography.shop.ebay.com/Cameras-Photo-/625/i.html?_nkw=Tokina%2050-135mm&rt=nc&For%2520Camera%2520Brand=Nikon&_catref=1&_dmpt=Camera_Lenses&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282

You may also want to consider getting the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 as well: http://photography.shop.ebay.com/Lenses-/3323/i.html?_nkw=Sigma%2050-150mm&rt=nc&For%2520Camera%2520Brand=Nikon&_catref=1&_dmpt=Camera_Lenses&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282
