Would the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G auto focus with the Nikon D3100?

Nope. To get autofocus, you would have to move up to the VR version at 4 times the price.

No
ONLY Nikkor AF-S and AF-I lenses can auto-focus using the entry level Nikon dSLR bodies. This information is in your user manual
You will need to be looking at the AF-S 70-300 mm f/4.6-5.6G IF lens
All the Nikkor AF lenses can be mounted on the entry level cameras, but will have to be manually focused using the electronic rangefinder in its viewfinder
