Will Nikon service my lens even though the problem only happens once in a while?

I bought a D40 with an 18-55 kit lens about a year and a half ago, and tehre is a problem with a lens.

Every once in a while the autofocus does not work.instead of focusing it makes a clicking noise and i have to nudge the focus ring a lil bit to get it working again. But this problem only happens once in a while, like maybe two times a day. Will Nikon still fix it?

They will at least try. However, if this lens is out of warranty, and it may well be, you'd be cheaper off buying a new one and selling this with the problem clearly indicated.

I would agree. Nikon will service it and can probably repair if needed but it will cost you not to mention the shipping back and forth.

You'd be just as well of buying a new lens. If you do that there are far better lenses than the
18-55 available so poke around before making a decision.

You might also get in touch with Nikon and try to get an estimate.

You could probably find a good deal on a used 18-55mm VR, which adds a nice feature absent from the original non-VR 18-55mm that came with the D40. Many people have these as kit lenses and have upgraded making them surplus. Of course you could also go and buy a fancier lens. The 18-105mm VR is reputed to be very good, One little downside to it is that it is reputed to have more chromatic aberration than the 18-55mm. The 18-105mm VR was introduced with the D90, which introduced in-camera chromatic aberration correction by the processor. The D40 body lacks that feature.
