Will a canon 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens work on a nikon d3100?

I have a nikon d3100, and was looking into buying a pancake lens. I've read many positive reviews for the canon 40mm. I just want to make sure it's compatible with my nikon camera.

Basically - no. Even in a complicated way - not satisfactorily, even if you bought the adapter. Do not contemplate such a combination unless you really know what you are letting yourself in for, and are prepared to work with less than half the facilities for which any Canon lens would be treasured.

Keerok and Kevin have a good idea.

Basically, if you need to ask the question, stick to lenses made specifically for lower-end Nikons, or change systems.

Canon lenses are made for Canon cameras. Nikon lenses are made for Nikon cameras. Since you own a Nikon camera buy a Nikon lens.

If you really want that lens, it would be best to buy a cheap Canon Rebel dSLR just for it.

No, the Nikon is not as great as the canon. Try another 40mm pancake just not with cannon, I've tryed and it got stuck and when i turned it off, the lens won't go inside.

If you want to put a 40mm prime lens on your D3100, there's the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor. It is not as compact as the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, but it can focus much, much closer.

Absolutely fantastic little lens - I have one. But it won't fit a Nikon.
Even if you can find an adapter you won't be able to manually focus it. In manual focus there's no physical connection between focus ring and focus motor - it is focus by wire.

No, it isn't, and adapting it isn't worth the hassle.
