First… Try another new battery, I have heard some just drain batteries. If it doesn't work with a new battery, send/take it back as defective.

If you have the Nikon ML-L3 remote, be sure the battery is properly seated in the remote. Take the battery out, clean it with a clean cloth, reinstall and see if that helps.

Be sure the camera can see the remote. The remote IR sensor is on the front of the camera. Stand in front of the camera, point the remote at the camera and see if that works.

In close quarters, the remote will work if your point the remote at a wall or object that the camera is facing towards. I use this technique when doing product shots.

Be sure that the remote icon on your camera is showing. It's easy to select a mode, but forget to hit the OK button to enable the mode.

You may have a defective remote. This is most likely if you bought a cheapo knock-off remote.

Check your camera battery to see if it is your battery problems

If it is your battery problem, you can take a replacement nikon camera battery.
