Why macro won't really work in my Nikon?

I have a d3100 with a 55-200 lens, and when i want to use the macro, it does not work, it won't get close. Its blurry. Does it mean that this type of lens is the wrong one?

Okay, you did not mention which macro lens you have. Is it the 60 mm, 85 mm, 105 mm or the new 40 mm macro lens.

Any of the Nikkor macro lenses will need to be AF-S lenses if you intend to use auto-focus.

For clarity, the 55-200 mm lens is NOT a macro lens.

Actually when shooting macro, the photographer usually sets the lens to the image to subject ratio to 1:1. 1:2, 1:3 or 1:4 and then move the lens toward or away from the subject to bring it into focus, so in reality, you really do not need the auto-focus feature.

Macro on a zoom lens generally means it can be used at about arms' length, there's no point in sticking it an inch from the subject.

It'll allow you to get closer than you would with a 200mm lens, and the magnification might be useful, but true 1:1 macro just isn't going to happen.
