Why is burst mode not working properly on my camera?

I have a Nikon D5000. The burst mode function is very slow for some odd reason. The shutter curtain seems to move at the correct speed, but the mirror is what seems to be lagging-seriously lagging (I can only take a about one picture per second).

I've dropped the camera once, but managed to fix the shutter curtain, and my camera worked fine. The last time I used it was about a week ago and it worked without issue. What gives? I don't see how it would just stop functioning properly. Is this a common occurrence? Should I just say screw it and buy a new camera body?

I'd appreciated any insight, because I'm seriously about to smash my camera with a sledgehammer and stop wasting my time and money with photography. I don't say this in jest.

Yes, and you tend to repeat yourself.

You dropped your camera - end of discussion.

Are you using it in live view mode? If so, then that may cause a significant delay between the shots.

Are you perhaps using a very slow SD card?

So YOU dropped the camera & now you're blaming IT for not working?

"Is this a common occurrence?"… Yes it is… For people who drop their cameras.

"What gives?"… You have joined the prestigious "I fixed my camera and now it doesn't work" club

"Should I just say screw it and buy a new camera body?"… Definitely, the world economy needs more people who have the money to go out and buy a new camera every time they break theirs.

In all seriousness… I have been using cameras for 35+ years and have never dropped one. BUT, then again… Anytime my camera is not in its padded bag, the neck strap is around my neck or it is securely fastened onto a stable tripod.

The only thing you can do at this point is send the camera into Nikon to get a repair estimate, but don't be surprised if they tell you $250+ to fix the issues.
