Why doesn't my Nikon d5100 play back pictures?

I just bought a new Nikon d5100 and I was taking pictures on manual mode and when I went to go back and look at the pictures it showed a black screen. I changed the mode and took some pictures and I was able to see them after.

Is there a setting that I need to change that will let me play back the pictures when I'm using manual mode, or is there something else I need to do to fix this?

Most likely what happened was, you don't know how to use manual mode yet. You didn't set the shutter and aperture properly to get a decent exposure and its what made your pictures look black.

There's NOTHING wrong with your camera. Those black screen shots are caused by you grossly underexposing the shots.

Hopefully by the time you learn how to use the camera properly, you will never have to check the LCD again. You will know you got it right without having to check

There's nothing wrong with your camera. When using manual mode, YOU have to set the exposure time and aperture. You're obviously using too short of an exposure time or too small of an aperture or too low of an ISO. It's more than likely a combination of the three.

It's just seriously underexposed.manual mode means you control all of the camera.know the exposure triangle of the exposure trinity to have a good exposure or else you will get a white screen(seriuosly overexposed pic), black screen(seriously underexposed pic), and blurred pic(slow shutter speed+movement).
