Seems you're paying a bit too much. Try going for a 600 instead, its got pretty much the same features plus I got mine for less tham £150!

Because Nikon will sell a lot more d3000s than sb900's.
Apart from the material costs there are also research and development costs, the SB900 is a very serious bit of kit with a lot of technology squeezed in, so a lot of research costs.
Most DSLR users don't buy an external flash, so really it's all down to economies of scale.
