Out of AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED, Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens and Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6, Which telephoto lens is the best to use with Nikon D5100 and why?

If you are even going to attempt to use the lens without a tripod then the lens needs to have vibration reduction, which I believe rules out the Sigma. So then have a look at the reviews for the two lenses (link below), it seems that the Tamron actually gets the better reviews by a sizeable margin. So it comes down to staying all Nikon, or trusting to a third party such as Tamron.

*70-300mm is not something that I do that much, most of my lenses are brighter, but shorter than this. I do however own Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro. On a Sony body, with in camera VR it's probably the better performing, though even then it's noting stellar.

The Nikon 70-300 VR is the best of the three. You really do need image stabilisation on a long telephoto. The Nikon is better optically and faster to autofocus than either of the Sigma lenses. In addition it has an "Active VR" button, which is designed for taking pictures from a moving vehicle, should you ever need to!

Take a look at the user reviews on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/...000HJPK2C/

Out of 52 user reviews, 48 are 4-star or 5-star, which is impressive for any zoom lens, as a lot of photographers are very fussy and pedantic when it comes to lenses.

Of the remaining 4 reviews, there's only one 1-star, from a muppet who couldn't get the cap off, and one 2-star from somebody with an unusual problem on a D300. Of the two 3-star complainers, one of them was actually a supplier complaint - and he admits the lens is excellent - and the other was trying to use the lens with a converter, beyond its capabilities.

All together then, the Nikon 70-300mm VR is an excellent lens which gets great reviews from the people who bought it.
