Which lens 35mm or 18-70 nikon?

I'm a young photographer and i don't have much money i eaither want a 35mm dx lens or a 18-70mm lens i have a nikon d5100 i used Pentax before this (k-x k-r).so what lens should i pick i want the 35mm because of the f/1.8 and iv'e herd this lens is very sharp. But i want the 18-70 because of its reach.
I'm in year book so i need a good lens for events and also family evens portraits and have a wedding to do in September please help.
Added (1). I have the 18-55vr and it isn't that good not very sharp

Having a 35 as your only lens would be quite limiting/
Get an 18-70, or better yet, get an 18-55 VR.

You would only really need a fast lense for low light shots. A 18-70mm is a good lense since people will mainly take more pictures during the day, and you have a wide angle zoom lense. And if its too dark, you can raise just raise the ISO.

True the 35mm will be limiting in terms of getting closer, but it's always possible just to get closer to the subject by walking towards them.
I think the 35mm overall will take great portrait shots because of the bokeh and fast aperature. It will also make you think more about each every shot.

The 35 mm will restrict your options when composing images.
The 18-70 mm lens will allow you to shoot landscapes, groups, full body, head and shoulder shots as well as some action photos.
The sharpness of a lens will not really show up until you buy a camera like the Nikon D800 which because if its high resolution will show flaws on any lens more readily

You binned a Pentax for Nikon? You deserve all you get.
I'm assuming you changed systems because your camera wasn't good enough - and are now exploring the wonderful possibility that it wasn't the camera's fault.
Good luck explaining why you ruined the happiest day of a couple's life.
What makes me dare to say these things? You have autofocus and VR and complain that your work isn't very sharp. That lens is capable of stunning results in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Stop blaming your kit and start learning, the best gear in the world is deadweight in the hands of an idiot.
