Neither is better. It depends on personal preference.

Well sensor wise, they are pretty much the same.

The Canon 1000D performs slightly better in low light.

Here is how their sensor perform, head to head.

As you can see, the 1000D performs a little better at high ISO's and the D3000 has a better dynamic range than the 1000D

Like the first answer, both are fine entry level cameras. Which you pick will have more to do with the kind of subjects you tend to shoot and which feels best in your hands

What that means in real time shooting can be seen here. This photo was shot at 3200 ISO and the D300 ISO performance lies between the 1000D and D3000

As you can see, there's not much noise in that shot.

I own a 1000D and its an excellent camera. I've had mine for well over a year with results like this.

Save a few pennies more and go for the D3100.It seriously beats these old entry level cameras.

I would suggest that Canon 1000D, it has better sensor and captures goos quality images in low lighting.

Both are good one. The best way to decide is going to camera shop and operate both the cameras and see which feels better.

Neither,
look at nikon d5000
or
nikon d3100
or
canon 1100d

they are much better,

do not look at 1000d, it's way too old to be bought now.
