Which Camera to Give as Gift?

I'm looking to buy a digital camera for my boyfriend, but am trying to decide which one I should go for. I personally love my camera, but I can't buy him the same thing because I can't afford it right now (it was a Sony DSLR around $700).

Here are some options I have come up with. I'll have to decide today whether or not I should go for the Sony one. I've also been really happy with Nikon in the past, but I've only really used their really high-end cameras.

Considering price and capabilities, what do suggest? Or is there a different one that you would suggest (preferably under $300)?

The Nikon will be more versatile, as you'll know if you use DSLR's yourself, but it is the most expensive option. The Canon powershot is a good camera too, but I've not used Sony, so I can't really comment on that one, I'm afraid?

Is his interest in photography as great as yours? Is a DSLR absolutely necessary? What about a quality "bridge" type camera? Take a look at the Pentax X5 for about $170.00 @ B&H Photo.
