Any dSLR has the potential of producing "High Picture Quality". They have sensors that are over 15 times larger than a P&S camera and that is just one of the reasons.

However, how well your shots turn out really depends upon YOUR skills using the camera of your choice and how well you compose your images. Being a great photographer demands that the user of the camera take a disciplined approach to each shot to assure the every time they press the shutter release, they are confident that the image is all they want it to be.

Here is a link to help you with composition

Since you are looking at the T1i, take a look at the Nikon D3100

As you can see, the sensors on each camera differ quite a bit and may help you choose the best camera for you

Badge enginnering doesn't mean your going to get a good camera… Sorry, but its true. Do not buy an entry level nikon. Or canon, for that matter, they are next to useless, and VERY limiting.youll be so disappointed.

i'm not going to bang the drum for my favourites… I'm a lifelong Olympus user… And i've looked and tried what the competiton has on offer in teh same price/.quality range… My E510 is every bit as good as the D80… At a quarter of the price, and half teh weight… (with a better metering system)

don't get sucked into the technobabble… But you have to make a decision, usually revolving around print size… Now, if you don't print, and just view on a TV or monitor screem then a D60 or an E1 will do you fine… (prints upto 10x8) if you need big HQ prints, then 10mp will goto A3 12x16 or 16 x20
13mp gives you posters…

oh and my E510 cost 215 quid, with 8000 activations… Its as good as new… And, in 35yrs of owning Olympus, not one of them has ever broken. This includes 35mm, OM1n, OM2n, OM4ti, e500 and e510)

you don't always get what you think youre paying for…
