Where do I get started with photography?
For Christmas I'm getting a nikon d5100 and a vintage polaroid camera. I don't really know much about dslr but I'd like to get started. I see beautiful pictures in galleries and such. I mean, how do I get that good, or something close.
Practice, study, practice more. Never use the "auto" setting on your camera. Take as many classes as you can. And then practice a whole lot more.
When you can look at a subject, and based on available light know instinctively what your aperture and shutter speed settings need to be to get a correct exposure, you're part way there.
When you know all the rules of composition well enough that you can start to reinterpret them in your own way, you're part way there.
Unfortunately, artistic talent is part practice and study, but it is also part innate ability. If you don't have the innate ability, you can become good, but never genius. And if you have the innate ability, but don't have the discipline to practice constantly, you can be good but never genius.
I agree with kevin and i would like to add: take as many classes as you can!
these don't have to be expensive, take classes at your local community college or google/yelp some good professional photography shops near you and walk in there and ask if they give classes/ or if they could recommend a place/ know of any regular customers that may know. Or google photography blogs for beginners or amateur photographers.learn as much as you can about different styles of photography (deadpan, portrait, narrative, landscape, etc.) and learn and study photographers/photographs to help you develop your own style.
just dive right in!
I recommend looking at the manual of your camera and also look up tutorials on youtube of your camera showing you how to use it. It takes loads of practice to get that good.
