What settings should my Nikon D5000 be at for a dance recital?

I'm going to be in the audience, in the dark, and the stage is lit in various colors depending on the dance.

What lens are you using?
what is your experience with a camera?
do you know about ISO, aperture, shutterspeed?

there are no MAGIC settings… You'll need to practice and see what happens…

you'll need to set the ISO as high as you are comfortable with - ISO800 or 1600

then it depends on your lens… If it is a 70-200mm f/2.8 then you get some good shots…

presumably this is your daughters dance recital… So you'll be concentrating on her.

and you probably have an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens… In which case you probably have neither the skills nor the zoom to get any good shots… And being away from the front of the stage, you will probably shoot the backs of peoples heads…

On the top move the dial to scene. Then use the command dial to party/indoors.
