What manual setting should i use on my D3000?
OK. I'm going to wrestlemania on april 1st and i will be sitting in a middle section at the Vip lounge area. I want to know what's the best setting i should use with the lighting and the distange. I've used all setting i just want to know what is best from people with more experience at sports events.
What should i set my EXPOSURE, F-STOP, and my ISO.
i know indoors i usually use about 800 ISO
Please keep in mind i will be in kinda low light and at a large distance at a wrestlemania event.
I have a Nikon 3000.a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro 1:2
my flash isn't very good its a TARGUS TG-DL20N. Don't think ima use it because i'm prob gonna be using the full 300mm zoom.
Added (1). Wanna try to get a good shutter speed. Not to fast because i need light and not to slow because there will be peopel wrestling and movement, but slow enough to get some good light.
No one can answer this unless they know the exact lighting at the time you take the shot!
Use you camera's light meter to determine what iso and aperture to use to give you a properly exposed photo while using a shutter speed over 1/250.
If you think a flash is going to make a difference at that distance you are clueless.
Set to at least ISO 800 (ISO 1600 most probably), aperture priority, largest aperture (lowest f/number) and if focusing is difficult, set to manual focus. Pick your shots like when they're down grappling and almost motionless or at the very end of a hit at the corner nearest you. That's when they emote their expressions the most and pause to make sure everyone sees their reaction. It's staged and choreographed. That's the beauty in it. Nice to practice taking action shots.
You need a shutter speed of at least 1/500th second.
You will have to adjust your ISO until you can get such a shutter speed when shooting with the lens wide open. This may require you to shoot at ISO 3200 or 6400. Don't worry about the noise you will get at those ISO settings, you can reduce that to some extent in post production. What you can't fix is blur caused by camera or subject movement
You WILL need to set the white balance to incandescent to match the lighting at the ring.
In addition to what the others said, make sure that DSLRs are allowed there in first instance. You may have a chance to be allowed to bring it due to the VIP tickets, but very most venues ban any cameras that look like a DSLR unless one has a press passport.
So… Better check this before the event.
