What lens can my camera support?

I'm using a Nikon D3100 DSLR with kit lens 18-55mm lens. I was wondering what kind of lens my camera support? And what other brand's lens can I use with my camera?

Added (1). If I'm going to use other brand's lenses do I need an adapter or something?

Only Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on your D3100. Lenses from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina must have a focusing motor in the lens for auto focus on your camera. Lenses without a focusing motor can be used but only with manual focus.

Any lens with a Nikon F-mount will attach to your camera. Not all lenses will autofocus though even if they're original Nikon.

You can get third-party brand lenses as long as they have the Nikon mount. Among them, the best would be Tokina with Sigma next. Far behind is Tamron. There are other brands but you may be better off not knowing them at all.

If you want better than original Nikkor glass and strive for the ultimate best, look at Schneider, Voigtlander and Zeiss. Just be ready to work without zoom and autofocus. Worse, with your camera, you may even lose the lightmeter with these lenses.

Adapters don't work very well. They result in degrading the optical quality of the lens. You will also not be able to infinity focus the lens with such adapters, as well as you will have to use manual focus, and manual exposure.

The only lenses you should be looking at are Nikon lenses or 3rd party lenses from Tokina, Sigma, or Tamron that are designed for Nikon cameras.

A DSLR consists of a camera body and lens. Cheaping out on the lens will not give you good results. If you are not prepared to buy good lenses, then you should reconsider buying a DSLR, as you will only be disappointed in the results.

Most Nikon lenses will work with the D3100, but for the auto focus to work you need to use AF-S lenses. Other Nikon lenses will fit and meter correctly but you will have to focus manually.
Any Nikon lenses that can't be used with the D3100 should be listed in the user manual.
Most lenses made by Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc are available for Nikon dslrs.

EDIT; no you won't need an adapter, brands like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina or even Zeiss make lenses that fit directly on to Nikon dslrs. However if they don't have focus motors built in to the lens then you will have to focus manually.

You didn't just buy a Nikon, you bought a SYSTEM! And it is best if you want quality to stick with Nikon lenses. Go to the Nikon web site and look around and study all the lenses and their suggested uses. It will be well worth your time. Today's digital DSLR cameras do not accept lenses that require adapters, as today's cameras have so much electronics's in them. Therefore you only purchase either Nikon lenses as stated before or a lens that has the Nikon lens mount.

The Nikon F lens mount is narrower than most. For that reason not many other lens mounts can be adapted to fit a Nikon body. The old 42mm screw thread lenses can be, not that it is very practical to do so. Nikon lenses can more often be adapted to other brands of body.
