What DSLR would be good for a beginner?
So I've recently decided/can now eventually afford to buy my first DSLR. I'm interested in landscape photography and I was just wondering if there was a particular camera that would suit my needs without being ridiculously expensive. I've had a look around the internet, camera mags etc. And I'm sort of torn between Nikon d3100 and Pentax k-r. However, if there are any other cameras anyone would recommend I'd love to know… Thanks!
If you'd taken the trouble to read any of the about 4 dozen exactly identical questions here you'd know the answer.
At your level the cameras are all good.
The Nikon system has some features that the Pentax does not.
1) While it can use all the fine Nikkor AF-S lenses, it can also use the best of the best generic lenses, Tokina. Both Nikkor and Tokina make the lens you need for shooting brilliant landscapes, the 12-24 mm. Pentax has a 12-24 mm lens as well. I suggest you visit a proper camera store and test both cameras with the 12-24 mm lenses attached to each.
2) Nikon also has the most available lenses between the two camera systems, so later you will be able to have better options when adding to your cameras system.
Here is a link (with a rather long article on where Nikon, Pentax and all the other makers of dSLR cameras seem to be going, future wise.

I would recommend canon EOS DSLR's
depending on your budget chose the one you can afford.
i own a 500D - rebel T1i - £600
rebel Xsi £450
rebel Xs £400
rebel T2i £800
rebel t3i £1000
EOS 5D - £2000
very good quality cameras
I would stay away from the pentax one and go for a nikon or a canon as they have the most readily available upgrades that are priced competivly
Pentax is a less known brand, but just as good and old as Canon and Nikon.
Pentax K-r has 6 vs 3fps, faster AF system, better built body and slightly better high ISO performance.
Here's a DSLR Buying Guide - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/11/which-dslr-to-buy/
I would highly recommend the Canon EOS 1000d.
You could pick one up second hand with a kit lens for around £250-300.
I bought mine back in Feb, and haven't looked back since. It's a great camera to learn on.
Some examples: www.flickr.com/photos/olivergt/ All of those were taken with the 1000d
The d3100
Nikon D3100 18-55vr Kit camera is everything that I had hoped for, and a little bit more. I probably won't buy another 'proper camera' for quite a few years and so I wanted something that would not only last, but would help me rediscover photography and allow me to grow. If you are a novice and/ or, returning to photography after a considerable time away, then I would highly recommend the Nikon D3100.
