Use Laptop as monitor for Nikon D3100?

I'm planning on producing a video for a film festival coming up, and I plan on shooting the majority of it with my Nikon D3100 because of the cinematic look of the video (ie: depth of field) seeing that the other cameras I have are all high-end broadcast cameras which look great for the concerts and church shows I film, but not really on the big screen.

Seeing that the on-camera monitor is relatively low resolution, and my external ones aren't much better, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to use a laptop as an external monitor for better focusing, and a better live preview. I'd prefer it be free, but I guess I'll pay whatever. I've All ready tried Nikon's Camera Control Pro, but the D3100 isn't supported.

Since it is not really necessary to view the video you are shooting in high resolution, you may be worried about nothing.

The auto focus in the video mode is pretty good and can be depended on, but like ANY camera, you have to spend a lot of time using it before you will feel comfortable using it under any and all conditions.

What has happened is you bought an entry level dSLR, but are attempting to use it in ways that require a more sophisticated camera like the D7000.

Lightroom 3 can tether some Nikon and Canon cameras for shooting stills, but the D3100 isn't one of them

What is the problem with shooting your D3100 with it attached to a tripod and fluid head like you would if you were using a real video camera?

While the D3100's LCD is certainly much smaller than those on a notebook or desktop computer, they are large enough to make decisions while shooting video… The same size as the LCD on my actual video camera.

You really just have to learn to trust the auto-focus on the camera. After all, it is the only entry level camera that has auto-focus in the video mode.

None of the tethering software I have seen does anything but control still image capture.

If you are experienced shooting video using a video camera, just us the D3100 using the same techniques.
