Upgrade from d40 to d7000?

I'm planning on upgrading from my Nikon d40 to a Nikon d7000. I currently have for lenses, af-s 18-200 and af-s 10-24. What should I expect to see from this upgrade? Will these lenses perform the same way on a d7000? I'm assuming that if I crop a photo with the higher MP it would be a lot sharper with the d7000. Any other info is appreciated.

You will see an increase in resolution, however waiting to crop your images in post is wasting what image is captured on the sensor, they are small enough without cropping the center out of them later.

Take care to fill the frame in your viewfinder before you press the shutter release

That said, the low-light performance will be amazing.

The lens performance will be the same, you will just see much better images because of the increase in technology

Here is a sample video made with the D7000

With the increase from 6MP to 16 MP, your pictures viewed at 100% should reveal a little more detail. That could be a mixed blessing, because any unsharpness of the lens will be magnified and more noticeable at 100%. The 18-200mm is likely to have some. Some of the 18-200mm's purple fringing may be decreased in.jpg's from the D7000, because its processor corrects for it.

Almost the same sensor size with more megapixels? I'd say almost negligible differences. You would have more control range though. That's what matters more.

You can expect a tougher, better built body with more weight. Much more AF points with much better performance at action and low light, 6 fps vs 3 or how many does the D40 have. Yes, cropping on a camera with more MP makes it sharper than with a smaller one.

Both are a DX type of a camera so lenses will work. Though your 18-200mm isn't what I'd call a great lens, I think you should sometime in feature get yourself a prime or at least a better zoom.
