It is possible just to replace the current lens to higher version with the same body? I don't want to buy new one for the meant time due economic problem. Any suggestion that I could enjoy my camera at the moment with higher version of lens.

"Higher version" doesn't say much. But you can buy different lens for the D40. The 28- 200mm is a great lens.

The D40 can use ANY Nikkor AF-S lens

I do not know what you mean by "higher version"

If you want to be able to shoot sports, action and some wildlife, the new 55-300 mm may be just the ticket. If you want to save some money, you may be able to find a good used Nikkor 55-200 mm lens for under $150

The D40 came with the Nikon 18-55mm lens. If you want a direct upgrade for this then the two most obvious options are:-

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4

Rather than upgrade your normal zoom kit lens look for another lens that complements your standard lens. A wide angle, tele-zoom or a "portrait lens. And then next year add another camera body to fill out your kit and keep the d40 for a backup.

Of course you can upgrade your lens. It would just depend on what you're looking for.

All of the Nikon lens (some old ones only can be used in M) can be used on the D40 body.
The newer ones are completely compatible.

The main issue really would be, why do you want to upgrade? What is the 18-55mm not doing for you that you want a new one? For me i like taking portrait photography so i've been searching and am going to get a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens.

If you like nature/landscape or action photography you would want a telephoto lens. Or there are
specialty lens out there too like macro and fish eye.

I had your dilemna about a few months ago and did tons of research and realized the best answer is what kinds of photos do you enjoy taking most?

So once you answer that you can decide what kind of lens to go for.

hope that helps.
