Third party external flash as commander on Nikon DSLR?

I have a Nikon D7000, Nikon SB-700, and a Dot Line RPS D728AFN (third party i-ttl flash). I'd like to use the SB-700 remotely off camera. In commander mode, the built in camera flash will set off the SB-700. However, when I use the Dot Line RPS flash attached to the D7000 in commander mode, the SB-700 doesn't work remotely with it. Is there a way around it? To get them to work together?

backstory: I had the Dot Line RPS flash from my previous DSLR, and bought the SB--700 recently. The reason why I wanted to use the Dot Line RPS flash attached while the SB-700 is in slave mode is because I have a lens that's too big and casts a shadow with the normal built in lens.

You can try mounting your SB700 on the camera as it can also act as a remote master, then put your 3rd party flash on a Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 Wireless Remote Transceiver, which may or may not work.

I have not tried it, but I'd say it is 50/50 whether or not it will work.

But at $220, it is not a cheap solution. I suppose you could always buy one at a place that allows returns so if it doesn't work you can return it.

All of the other solutions I can think, like a pair of Yongnuo RF-603s will require you to put the flash in manual mode.

I have a pair of these, but I only use them for a remote shutter release, not a flash trigger, but they should work.

Commander has to be the pop up flash, otherwise your third party flash must be use as a master flash if mount on the D7000 (I doubt he can do it). The sb800 & sb900 can do it.

The third party flash must be use off shoe in order to make the CLS work with the sb700.

The D7000 can be use as master with the Nikon CLS system, which mean you could set the camera flash setting to master, then adjust the power to "---" so the pre flash won't show on the photo, set the D7000 to TTL if you want it, if not use manuel (on the camera flash menu).

If you use the TTL, Set the sb700 in slave mode.

If your third party flash have an optical option on it like the sb700 you can use to trigger it but you'll have to adjust the power manually.

Or you could buy a small optical trigger device to mount the third flash on it (you could use the TTL for the sb700 and manuel setting for the third party flash.) It doesn't cost that much, the reliability can be good as bad depending if there's allot of light going on around you, it may trigger the flash.
