Third party AF-S lens for Nikon?
I've been buying Nikon lenses for my D5100. Now, I want to move on to other manufacturers. I'm worried about the Auto-focus motor. How do I make sure that the Tamron or Sigma i'm buying will have an auto-focus motor in the lens? Thanks.
Added (1). More details:
I happened to pick one of my friend's Tamron, and the focus motor did not work on my D5100.
Would be great if you guys can also give me info on how to figure out about the Image stabilization or Vibration reduction terms used by these third party manufacturers.
I only buy Tokina lenses as a 3rd party lens, but my D90 will work with the AF style lenses. Tokina only has one lens that has a built-in motor. For that lens, the designation is "DX II".
For the other lens manufacturers, you will have to look at each lens and read the description from their respective websites.
Sigma, I believe uses the designation HSM for their in-lens motors, but I think all of their DX size lenses have built-in motors (but I'm not 100% sure).
It's not been a big thing for me as I always buy full frame lenses when I can (which work perfectly on DX cameras). I figure one day, I might make the move to a full frame DSLR, and if I do, my lenses will be there.
Sigma uses HSM ("high speed motor") and OS ("optical stabilization")
Tamron uses PZD ("piezo drive") or BIM ("body internal motor", unintuitively), as well as VC ("vibration control")
Lenses that are labelled HSM (for Sigma), PZD or USD (for Tamron) have AF motors. Older designs with micromotor AF aren't always labelled, you need to be careful with these lenses, check that it's advertised as motorised, or ask the seller whether it is motorised.
There are also some Sigma lenses that never had an AF motor, you can tell from these charts
- for current DG lenses http://www.sigmaphoto.com/...lens-chart see bottom for G-type Nikon compatibility.
- for DC lenses http://www.sigmaphoto.com/...lity-chart
- for discontinued lenses: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/...lens-chart (see bottom of page for an explanation of the abbreviations and Nikon G-type compatibility).
Tamron aren't so considerate and haven't produced compatibility charts.
52mm Flower Petal Lens Hood is Nice and cheap Petal lens hood, good quality, fits straight on to my Nikon D5100. No complaints with this at all, recommended.
