You shall stick to your D3100

a DSLR camera is not something you replace every so often because you feel like it. You replace a DSLR when it falls apart or if there's specifically a feature you need on another camera. You should now go for new lenses, not a new camera. What type of photography do you want to do more of? Macro? Portrait? Landscapes?

answer that question, then buy a lens that suits that purpose

I agree. These cameras are engineered to last a long time and continue to produce excellent photos for many years to come. Just because you're familiar with it doesn't mean you're going to gain anything at all by replacing the body. Remember skill is the only thing that really counts when it comes to making nice photos. The tool is just a tool so use it.

Yes, add some lenses - that's the real key to improving your equipment bag.

The D3100 isn't disposable but if you have your reasons about changing your camera then only you should now exactly what you're looking for.

Ask yourself which feature of the D3100 is lacking that the higher end bodies have and are they worth the money for the upgrade.
If you are satisfied with the features of the D3100 I suggest you look for a lens/flash/accessory that you might need instead.
Otherwise look at the D90/7000/300 bodies or even the D700/D3 bodies as your next upgrade.
