Should I sell my 18-55mm lens?

Should I sell my Nikkor 18-55 VR lens? At the moment I have that and the 55-200 and I'm saving up to buy the Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF-S for my Nikon D5000. Do you think the 50mm 1.4 is alright for everyday kinda 'going around' photos and photos of you and your friends etc? Or would it be better just to keep my 18-55 for those kind of photos?

The 18-55 is a good lens. The 50mm is good too but no zoom at all. I'd keep it.

A 50mm is going to give you an equivalent full-frame focal length of around 75mm. This is going to get really tiring when you have to back up for every shot or cut off things you want in the frame. 50mm is more for full-frame. When I had a 70-200mm lens on my old Minolta 35mm SLR, I found it almost useless for 'normal' pictures.

If you still want the 50mm, you should keep the 18-55. You won't get much for your kit-lens, and it is far too useful and excellent to give away.

A more useful low light prime lens for your camera would be the 35mm f/1.8, which is cheaper too. For nearly ten times the price of the f/1.8 you can get the insanely fast 35mm f/1.4.

The 18 to 55 is very useful. I would definitely keep it.
