Should i just skip the kit lens and buy a 35mm 1.8 for my nikon?

I'm buying my first dslr, i would like to purchase a nikon d3100. I have read a lot of places the kit lenses are a waste. I also read a good first lens in the 35mm 1.8.

like i said i'm new to this whole thing and i'm wondering if that is in fact a good lens to go with. I would like to shoot pictures of my kids, and also to land scape for my husbands work website. I plan to get a wide angle lens in the near future, but in general will i be missing out on anything by skipping the kit lens, or is this the best way to go?

If i were you, i would get a 50mm 1.8, because that its the best lens in my opinion i use it all the time, and only once in a while use a kit lens.

The 35mm AF-S f/1.8 is an excellent lens, and one that's a favorite of mine.

But, I'd recommend getting the D3100 with the 18-55mm AF-S VR kit lens as it give you a wider range of possibilities and is fairly inexpensive when purchased as part of the kit.

If you've only got the 35mm, then you'll often find yourself wishing you were closer (55mm for the kids) or further back (18mm for wider shots of the landscaping) from the subject(s). The 18-55mm is a great lens to start with, as well as to learn from.

The 50mm f/1.8 is an excellent, lens, but it has two shortcomings for you.
1. Again, it's a fixed focal length.
2.It won't autofocus on your D3100.

And if you think autofocus isn't that important, try to tell your children to always hold still. Trust me, it doesn 't work.
