Rules I need to know on street photography?
I want to try street photography, I just want to know if there's a rule that I need to know And I want to get some tips. I live in Ontario, canada. I have nikon d5100 with the kit lens.
The goal is to capture street people doing what they do.
For this reason, you want to use a camera that you can shoot from the hip.
Once anyone sees you with your camera up to your face, taking photos, one of three things will happen
* They will become animated and start to perform for the camera
* They will face away from you so you can no longer see their faces or more importantly their expressions
* The may get irritated and berate you for getting into their "space"
My artist friends who shoot street photography actually use old 35 mm rangefinder cameras with a 35 mm wide angle lens. Since much of their shots are shot on the shady side of the street, they use either Tri-X or T-Max 400 film and develop for about 20% longer to increase the contrast lost when shooting in the shade.
In the case of using your D5100, set your 18-55 mm lens to 18 mm and take random shots of the people around you as you walk down the street. Stopping to take a picture will attract a lot of attention, so your chances of getting good in situ photographs will become problematic.
Be patient. It can take a few days of walking through the streets before you get the hang of it and produce some amazing shots.
