I have a Nikon D40x and i'm looking for some new lenses. I currently have a really basic lens, FL- 18-55 but i'm having trouble shooting macro shots, or really just a larger depth of field more defined. Sorry if this makes little sense i'm pretty new to camera talk! But i've been looking for reviews and i'm having trouble finding something.

There are macro lenses used for shooting closeups.

The 18-55 mm is an excellent lens for shooting landscapes, groups and head and shoulders shot of your friends. This lens is NOT a macro lens

Depth of field has to do with the aperture you use and the focal length of the lens.

Reviews really rarely talk about how the lenses are used, but how someone "feels" about using a lens. Not very helpful when it comes to choosing a lens, since there are only a few professional users that ever write reviews. They tend to be more subjective and totally based upon the persons skills or lack of skills as a photographer. If a poor photographer says a lens is horrible, it has more to do with their inability to use it, not the lens itself.

Pick a lens based upon the subjects you tend to shoot. Any Nikkor lens you choose will be perfectly able to produce fine images.

Basics:

Landscapes: 10-24 mm
Sports, Action and wildlife: 70-300 mm or 70-200 mm depending upon your budget
Macro: 60 mm f/2.8 macro

The shorter the lens, the more apparent depth of field at any given aperture.

So you want a macro lens or something with a low f-number. For the first there's a lot options depending on what you want to shoot (insects, flowers, your stamp collection). For the second, check out nikon's 35mm f1.8.
