I've been with my Nikon D40 along with collecting lenses for some years and now feel like I'm ready to take a leap a level up in processing, what next model Nikon would fit perfectly next? I'm in a budget of no more then $1, 000

The Nikon D7000 although with an 18-105mm lens its $1, 396.95 but the body only is just $1, 096.95 at B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ovideo.com Prices reflect a $100.00 'Instant Savings" from B&H that ends 8-25-2012. Free USA shipping.

Since you say you have several lenses just buy the D7000 body.

What do you think a newer camera will give you that the D40 won't?

unless the D40 has broken, keep using it…

most people who think an UPGRADE is necessary, are people who are unhappy with their current "work"… But that is down to their insufficient skills with a camera…

The first camera in Nikon's pro line is the D300s which retails for $1600 body only. So you'd have to spring for an advanced amateur level like the D90 or D7000.

Look on a used site like KEH, sometimes you can find a great deal on a slightly used camera body.

You've been using your D40 for years now? Props man!

If your budget is no more than $1000, I'd consider getting a D7000 USED, a D90, or a D300. Get them used and in good condition if possible.

You can also consider getting an old pro level body called the Nikon D2X, which sells for about $725 used. Be careful, as it only goes up to ISO 800.
