Go down to Walmart and hold each of them, try them out. Then decide for yourself, it's all a matter of personal preference.

I'd probably opt for the Nikon, but it's really down to personal preference. Go to a shop and handle both, see which feels more comfortable and look through the viewfinder, the canons can sometimes be a little restricted in this area. Read reviews and check out the specifications of both. I don't think there will be a lot to choose in picture quality, so see which feels best to handle, talk to the salesman and take your time deciding.

Canon EOS 1000D 10MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens is better. Go to http://www.thecheapest-ever.com/ and you'll get it cheaper.

I happen to own the 1000D and it's excellent. I've had mine for well over a year and I'm getting the results I really want. Understand any dslr camera is not a magic bullet and there's a learning curve that must be respected if you hope to be successful.

Instead of looking at the cameras, look at the lenses. Canon lenses are easier to get 2nd hand, easier to rent and cheaper. More professional photographers use Canon than they do Nikon.

Either of the bodies will be fine for you - but in the long run you'll find it easier and less costly to grow your range of equipment if you go with Canon.
