I have a nikon D3000, and i wanted to invest in some supplies involving off camera flashes. What do you recommend i buy for flashes, triggers, commanders.yadda yadda or anything i would need to accomplish this.price isn't really a concern but as most people would like to do, id like to spend as little as possible, but still get the satisfaction from the products. I would like two flashes, and whatever else you feel would be necessary.

I can't fully answer the question since I don't have a lot of accessories but I can suggest DEMB flash bouncer products. They are a twist on the reflective paper trick but include a strap and can use colored inserts. I have used them for a while and love them. Way better than anything Gary Fong makes. Also there's the PressLite Vertex, which I haven't tried but is very intesting and very complicated. You can't say that they didn't invent something nobody else offers though, so worth a look. While most of these things are for actually on camera, they can be used on off camera flashes and anytime you can get away with using less light sources, it's always easier to work in, so these tools help for that.

RadioPopper is also very interesting, as it's a PocketWizard competitor but VERY cheap.

AlienBees I just have to suggest but nothing specific from them. They just make good reflectors, diffusers, huge powerful flashes, etc. They have a quite a reputation and if you ever need something, they would be a good place to explore first.

You need to decide if you want iTTL control of the flashes, or just the ability to trigger the flashes off camera. It will make a world of difference in cost and how you use the gear.

To go iTTL will be the most expensive route, by a wide margin. You would need at last two flashes, and a third flash or controller on the camera. The unit on the camera can be the SU-800 or an SB-800 or better. The off-camera flashes can be any iTTL model, but the SB-600 should be the minimum. Two SB-600's and an SU-800 would be about… $700.

If you are comfortable with manual flash, you can get flashes at $40 or so each, plus a trigger set including one transmitter and 3 receivers for another $45. Get on Ebay and search "YN-460 II" for your flashes. As for the flash triggers, there are about 30 brand names for the same Chinese made stuff… Search for Cactus flash trigger, or Phottix flash trigger, and you will get thousands of hits.

Light stands with appropriate mounting heads… One for each off-camera flash. Another Ebay item, a seller called Cowboy Studio does sets with stand, umbrella and mount for $50 or less. Just make sure you know which mount you are getting, to match the wireless triggers. Some screw onto a standard 1/4x20 thread, others want to fit into a hot shoe type mount. Get the umbrella you want, a shoot through or two and maybe a gold and a silver.

Total with all accessories for non-TTL flash… $200 or less.

Easiest way would be to go for nikon, get a couple of sb-600 and a su-800 as a commander. But that's expensive. Still, a couple of sb-600's could be reused when you move to a more advanced body. As a trigger you could go for a simple set of ebay triggers
