Is it possible to use a flash trigger (for off camera flashes) with the Nikon d3000?
I have a Nikon D3000 camera and want to use an off camera flash for some shots that I want to take. Does anyone know if the D3000 is compatible with this?
Yes. You can use wireless remote triggers such as Yongnuo RF602 to trigger an external flash, but you won't get TTL that way, only manual power output (which is not a bad thing, as it's more predictable that way).
Alternatively you could get a flash with optical slave mode, such as the Yongnuo YN560. You can trigger it with the popup flash of your camera. This works quite well indoors (where lots of walls reflect your flash, thus making it easy for the off camera flash to detect it), but not outdoors.
Almost all the cheap generic triggers will work, however the flash you use will be manual only. This means cheaper flashes like the SB400 would not be suitable. Like this: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=radio+trigger&_sacat=0&_odkw=intl+radio&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
If you want TTL (automatic flash exposure) you will need to spend a little more on a trigger like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/...45f82c76ab
If you really want top class funtion then it's the Pocketwizard that you want, but that's over £200.
Yes
The RF602's are excellent triggers (I have some I use with Nikon gear). You will have to control the flash output manually on the flash - you won't have TTL (auto flash metering) using these triggers.
I can also recommend the Yongnuo 460-II and 560 manual flashes too - excellent value for money.
A YN560 & RF602 will cost you around £70.
