So I was considering buying the nikon d5100 with the kit lens (18-55mm) but I'm mostly using the camera for photo shoots/portraits and events like parties Etc. I was contemplating on just buying the nikon d3100 body and investing in a better lens, the 35mm 1.8.Is this a good idea?

Yeah get the 3100 and a 35mm(which will be about 50mm on that)(about 150-200$) lens and a tripod and youre all set to go. Also don't forget to get a memory card.
They have a few deals on ebay where they are selling the camera kit, memory and a tripod.

Be sure that you can buy the camera body only. Sometimes the only way you can buy the D3xxx camera is in a kit with the 18-55mm lens.

In the days of the SLR - especially 30 years ago, it was common to buy a SLR with just a single prime 50mm f/1.8 lens (which is more or less equivalent to a D3100 with a 35mm). Many many photographers bought such setups initially, so it is not necessarily a bad way to go.

And the 35mm f/1.8 will be sharper than the 18-55mm kit lens.

I like D5200 with 35mm f1.8G.

I don't know about the 3100, but I have a 5100 and the high ISO noise control it great. I shot a Christmas play at ISO 6400 with no noticeable noise even when enlarged. The 5100 is only $80 more than the 3100 and has way more features. A very important on that the 3100 lacks is the infrared ports that allow use of the Nikon hand held remote shutter control (only $20). You might find that really useful.Me? I'd get the 5100 with the kit lens and if it doesn't get the job done, then consider a 1.8 prime. The 35mm 1.8 is a good lens, but you're really limiting yourself compared to the zoom. And the f1.8 is only needed in low light situations and means nothing in low-bright light
