Nikon D90 with 18-55 mm lens focusing issues? - 1
Added (1). I have a Nikon D90 that I have been using for portrait photography. I have an 18-55mm lens thats probably 10 years old that I use. I now realize that this is a pretty old lens, but it still works pretty well. The biggest problem that I'm having with it is that when I use it to take photos, it tends to focus on what is behind the subject rather then their face. Do you think this a back focus issue? Or am I just not using the focus correctly? Is there anything I can do to change this?
What kind of problems?
* do you have your lens set to M/A or M?
* is you D90 set to auto-focus continually, singly or manual focus?
* is the environment too dark for the auto focus to work?
* did you drop your camera recently?
* does this only happen with the 18-55 mm lens or your other lenses as well?
There are really just too many variables for us to guess your problem.
Try to write a simple paragraph explaining in more detail when you have this focusing issue
NOTE: If the focusing spot is directly on the subject, then it should focus there. If it isn't, you may want to send it into Nikon for repair. My Nikon D300 started missing focus intermittently after I was hit by two defensive tackles and a running back when I was shooting on the sidelines. Nikon repaired the focusing system as well as replaced the cameras shutter for under $250. It came back looking new.
See if your camera shows a focus tuning option in the menu. That may help you.
Lens (and camera) age does not matter as long as they function perfectly.
Are you sure your subject is beyond the minimum focusing distance of that lens? That would be about a foot.
To check if your lens is really the problem, go outside, position someone 5 feet away from you and 5 feet away from a brightly colored parked car in the background. Do this under the sun. If the camera keeps focusing on the car, have it checked (both camera and lens) at the service center.
Your camera has multiple focus areas, as indicated by small squares or dots when viewing through your viewfinder. When you press the shutter button down halfway, it lights up the selected focus point, which might not be the one you actually want. You can move the focus point with your directional control button.
