Nikon D7100 focusing issue?

I recently upgraded from a D3100 to a D7100; however, I'm finding the D3100 better and am very very disappointed with my D7100.

Here's the problem. I'm an automotive photographer and the D7100 rarely focuses on what I want it to. When shooting cars the car is out of focus or focuses on the people inside. It's extremely annoying.

I shoot AF-C with a 50mm 1.8 / 35mm 1.8 - the camera is new and so are the lenses so it is in perfect condition.

Why would you choose AF-C. Are your subjects moving? Doesn't sound like it. Go to AF-S. Also use Single-point AF to get it to focus on what you want.

You are using the wrong focus mode. Sounds like you need to use spot focus with AF-A or AF-S. Or you could simply use manual focus.

Err…, have you tried to focus manually?

I just have to say that the camera being able to spot the people inside the car is just fabulous!

Set focus point to single at dead center then focus on the dashboard, steering wheel, windshield wiper or whatever, lock focus then recompose before you take the shot.

Sounds like you're using wrong focus type. Use AF-S. I prefer to use spot metering, as I have more control over where it focuses.
