For your purpose, the 18-55mm would be perfect. If you wanted more blurring power, get the 50mm f/1.8 which is cheap enough. It can also be used as your walk-around lens if you don't mind walking around more to get the right angle.

If you job really is wedding, you need to spend more. $600 will only gave you limited lens, either you want all in one kitchen sink but not as sharp and slow not good low light, or get a fast low light limited zoom lens.
Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR Nikkor Wide-Angle
Probably best for your budget, very usefull wide angle and has decent zoom. Wide Angle perhaps the most common one they want to use in wedding and the close up, the 85mm can reach your that distance, however you need to spend another few hundred for external flash is a must.

50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8G.
