Nikon d5100 mid telephoto lens?

I don't really like the 18-55 kit lens, it's too slow and i'd like to upgrade to something faster. The d5100 doesn't have a built in focus motor, so the lens must have a built in motor. Any recommndations? Oh, i'd like to keep it under $400, and used will be okay too

The AF-S 55-300 mm is just under $400
But you need to keep the 18-55 mm or you will lose the ability to shoot landscapes, group shots and full body shots.
"Faster" zoom lenses all cost over $1, 000, so those are out.

Look for the AF-S lenses. They all work well on your D5100

By too slow, in this forum, that means that its widest aperture is too small, as in your 18-55mm lens has a f/3.5 to f/5.6 range. A faster lens would be the 50mm f/1.8 lens, which I have for my Nikon D90, and I highly recommend.
Don't know how knowledgeable you are about lenses, you might be talking about how fast the lens will focus.
