I have been looking all over the net for this answer. I have my Nikon D5100 in TTL mode and my SB-700 in remote slave mode manual, when i take a picture I can see the off camera flash. Is it working? I read that I needed to put my camera to manual flash as well.very confused now

The D5100 does not have a flash commander built in, so what you are trying to do won't work. You need at least a D80 to get a flash commander.

I'm not sure how you are getting your flash to fire, but with the flash in wireless mode, it will beep when it flashes correctly.

To properly use this flash off camera, you either need a SC-29 remote cable that is about 10ft, or a SU-800 wireless commander that will fit on your camera's hot shoe.

Unfortunately the SU-800, costing $250 is about the difference between a D5100 and D7000 (which would have this built-in).

If you are getting into the advanced areas, you may wish to trade in or sell your D5100 and buy a D7000 as it is going to be less cost effective to keep the D5100 when you start doing these kinds of things.
